December 9

December 8
Today we finished Chapter 7, with a little bit about how cells can make nonspontaneous reactions spontaneous by "coupling" them - a version of Hess' Law.
The only new material for the final: ∆G = ∆H - T∆S and ∆G = -RT lnK
Tomorrow, Dec. 9: Make sure you go to your discussion section and turn in your last homework.
Monday, Dec. 14: optional review session, 7:00 pm, 165 Everitt Hall
Wednesday, Dec. 16: FINAL EXAM, 1:30-4:30 pm, rooms depend on what section you are in: 100 Noyes Lab (Noel and Michael), 116 RAL (James and Mary), 152 Chem Annex (Dewey). BRING A PENCIL since we may be doing scantron forms for the multiple choice portion of the exam.

Exams I, II and III, quizzes and homework scores will be set by the time of the final exam and cannot be changed. If you have a discrepancy with what you think a score is and what we think a score is, you need to see Prof. Murphy before the final exam.
December 3
In class on Dec. 1 we reviewed for Exam III. Exam III was administered Dec. 2; results are: high, 97; low, 30; mean, 73; median, 73; standard deviation, 13. The solutions to Exam III are posted as a pdf file under "Handouts."
Today in class we mostly finished Chapter 7 (in addition to going over Exam III).

Professor Murphy will be assigning more than 100 points of homework this semester. You get to keep points over 100 as extra credit!
Today in lecture we did a whole lot of intermolecular forces and discussed classifications and unit cells of solids. "Dance of the Solids" handout, a poem by John Updike, is posted under "Handouts". Homework for tomorrow: 5.1, 5.3, 5.17, 5.33, 5.39.

Exam II is done! High = 99, low = 28, average = 76, median = 78. Solutions are posted under "handouts".
We have started Chapter 5, intermolecular forces, solids and liquids. No homework assigned today but do start reading Chapter 5. Happy Halloween!

We finished Chapter 4 - Maxwell-Boltzmann kinetic theory of gases; gas speeds; Boltzmann statistics.
